“I know for a fact that the Emperor is proposing to mount a German opera in Vienna, and that he is making every effort to find a young Kapellmeister who understands German, has talent and is capable of striking out on a new path. [. . . ] I think it would be a good thing for me – provided, of course, that the pay is good.
