The volume includes five facsimiles of contemporary manuscripts, with a preface by Christopher Hogwood, and thorough editorial notes. The Pieces Characteristiques are amongst the most compact as well as the most stylistically varied of Bach's keyboard works. Many of the pieces, it has been established were originally arranged as sonatinas for keyboard and orchestra. This volume includes five facsimiles of contemporary manuscripts, with a preface from the editor Christopher Hogwood.
