Puccini was set to be the successor in fame and renown to Verdi, and with Manon Lescaut, he rocketed to equal levels of success. To produce this level of attention, the opera was staged in Turin rather than Milan, and was staged just before Verdi's own opera, ensuring all attention fell on Manon Lescaut instead.
